A new decade. Celebration is in the air. The mood in London is one of hope rather than hurt as its people finally feel able to look forwards rather than backwards. Then two bodies are found in the war-time shelters, a man and a woman, while the revelries continue unaware above ground. Who are they? What’s their story? Why were they murdered and how did they end up in the shelters?
Faye Smith has been working for the Met for a few years now and her confidence in her new role as detective constable is growing. She and partner Danny are finding that their home city is not as safe as the festivities above ground might indicate. If anything, the criminal underworld seems to be gaining strength and is enjoying a lively existence below the surface. Keen to unravel the mystery of the double murder, Faye finds herself getting tangled up in crimes that stretch far beyond a simple killing.
 
Meanwhile, her friend Ellie Peverell is busying herself with wedding preparations. The big day is almost upon her. Ellie does all she can to support her friend with her work but has her own worries with ex-fiancé Patrick Havistock looming in the shadows threatening to disrupt the nuptials. As Ellie soon finds out, there is a far greater danger lurking in the dark than just an embittered ex-fiancé.
Faye and Ellie are born survivors, but will they see off this latest threat in time for the wedding?
